What is GROW?

Before we get into GROW, we first need to introduce GlobeMed! GlobeMed is a grassroots student organization that aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of the impoverished around the world. The GlobeMed network engages over 2,000 undergraduates at 55 university-based chapters throughout the U.S. Each chapter is partnered one-to-one with a grassroots health organization in one of 19 countries throughout Africa, Asia, North America, and South America. Through their involvement today, our students and partners commit to a life of leadership in global health and social justice.

GlobeMed at the University of Michigan currently partners with two organizations. The first is Amun Shéa which is an alternative education grade school in Northern Morazán, El Salvador, the the second is Joy Southfield Health and Education Center which is a community-based organization in Detroit, Michigan. And now onto GROW! GlobeMed Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships are opportunities designed for GlobeMed members to work on-site with our partners.  The objective of GROW trips is to further our partnerships and our projects through on-site work and collaboration.  Through GROW, partnerships are strengthened, project work is contextualized, and students experience GlobeMed’s partnership model first hand, and bring back these experiences to the chapter at large. This summer, the University of Michigan chapter of GlobeMed will be sending four enthusiastic members to engage in a 6-week internship with our international partner the Amún Shéa School with the Perkin Educational Opportunities Program in Perquín, El Salvador.
